PATERSON – U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-08) today engaged in straight talk about health care reform with WNYC’s Brian Lehrer. As the congressman fielded questions from Mr. Lehrer and his radio audience, he advocated for a strong public health insurance option to compete against private coverage plans.
“We have great doctors and great hospitals, but we have a horrible delivery system,” said Pascrell, who worked with his colleagues on the House Ways and Means Committee to introduce a landmark health care form bill on July 14. The public health insurance option will be used as a catalyst to institute innovative payment systems that will drive delivery system reform.
“We can’t afford the system that exists now. I want a system we can afford,” said Pascrell during the interview. “That doesn’t mean your premiums are going to dive. It means that we’re going to start a level playing field through competition and through choice.”
