WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-08) expressed his disgust on the floor of the House of Representatives at the introduction of H.R. 1503, the so-called “Birther Bill” that would require presidential candidates to present birth certificates.
“H.R. 1503 is predicated on the vicious and false rumor that circulates among the fringe elements of our society that Barack Obama is not a citizen of the United States and his presidency is, therefore, illegitimate,” said Pascrell on the House floor.
Pascrell held a newspaper announcement of Barack Obama’s birth and a copy of the president’s birth certificate, which was authenticated by the state of Hawaii, as he made his statements.
“Despite being proved categorically untrue time and time again, this rumor stays alive because of tacit acknowledgment embodied in this legislation from legislators in this room,” Pascrell said. “This bill is nothing more than a shameful ploy to stir fear and dissention in the minds of the American people.”
The bill was introduced by Rep. John Campbell (R-Calif.) and Rep. Bill Posey (R-Fla).
